Bike and Boat Holidays
11 Day Tour
Arrive at Salzburg or Ljubljana airport. Transfer by minibus or taxi to our base hotel in Spittal.
Spittal. After breakfast you’ll be equipped with your bicycle. The day is then yours to explore Spittal and its surrounding area near the picturesque Lake Millstätt. We recommend a gentle cycle excursion to the lake shore for its beautiful beaches. Back in the town itself, the splendid 16th century Italian palace Schloß Porcia is a must-see. To the south, Goldeck Mountain reaches a dizzy 2142m - take the cable car to enjoy wonderful views from its peak.
Spittal to Egg am Faakersee: 26 miles (42km). The Drau Valley cycle route leads downstream through a broad glacial valley to Paternion. This pretty village, nestling between sunny mountain slopes and shady woodland, includes a charming pilgrimage church and 16th century castle. After passing through the historic town of Villach, we continue to Lake Faakersee, one of Carinthia’s finest.
Egg am Faakersee. With summer temperatures of 26ºC and an idyllic location, it’s easy to understand why Faakersee is among the region’s best bathing lakes. Pretty villages are sprinkled along the shoreline, while quiet lanes and tracks splinter into the breathtakingly beautiful countryside. It’s time to enjoy a little light cycling and some serious relaxation!
Egg am Faakersee to Feldkirchen: 22 miles (35km). Leaving the Drau Valley cycle route, our tour continues along the southern shore of the Ossiacher See, a serene lake cradled between steeply wooded slopes, with spectacular views to the Gerlitzen peak. The half-way point of today’s tour is the village of Ossiach, featuring a Benedictine Abbey dating back to the 11th century. Part of the building has been transformed into a hotel - the perfect place for lunch. Our route continues along the Tiebel Valley to Feldkirchen.
Feldkirchen. Set amid rolling farmland, Feldkirchen’s roots date to the Middle Ages - the old town is a maze of alleyways and narrow lanes, with historic buildings to discover at each turn. The quiet byways south-east of Feldkirchen are a cycling paradise - sleepy hamlets and inviting lakes are framed by high peaks as we ride past.
Feldkirchen to St Veit an der Glan: 18 or 26 miles (29 or 42km). Choose between a gentle meander along the pretty Glan Valley or a slightly more adventurous ride through several miles of track into a secluded valley and the heart of a wilder landscape.
St Veit an der Glan. The charming historic town of St Veit was the seat of the Dukes of Carinthia until 1518. The legacy is a grand square, flanked by beautiful period properties and arcaded courtyards. The focus for our recommended ride is nearby Hochosterwitz Castle, one of Carinthia’s most memorable landmarks. Owned by the same family since 1571, the castle features a series of 14 gates barricading its steeply spiralling entry pathway (it’s easy to imagine what an impenetrable barrier this presented to marauding Turks). Perched on an outcrop, the castle casts a dramatic silhouette for miles around.
St Veit an der Glan to Maria Wörth: 27 miles (43km). The tour continues south, roughly following the River Glan, before skirting the south shore of Lake Wörth to the village of Maria Wörth. A visit to Maria Saal, a pilgrimage church dating back to the 8th century, is rewarding for its Gothic structure and interiors. Nearby, Carinthia’s open air museum chronicles local life through the ages.
Maria Wörth. The village takes its name from the ancient church by Lake Wörth. The lake reaches a luxuriously warm 27ºC during summer - ideal for a relaxing swim. With several sophisticated resorts dotted along the shoreline, we recommend a circular route passing through Velden, an elegant spa town featuring a splendid castle.
We say “Auf Wiedersehen” before transferring you direct from Maria Wörth to Salzburg or Ljubliana airport by train or minibus.
One Night Or Two?
Most of our holidays are available in two formats: BSpoke Original (two-night stays at each hotel, moving on alternate days), and BSpoke One Night Stops (two nights in your first hotel, followed by just one night in each subsequent hotel, for those who want to cycle a distance every day).
