The Legendary Danube - Austria

7 Night Tour

Day 1

Arrive at Munich. Transfer to Passau, where you’ll board your boat and be equipped with your bicycle. You’ll have time this afternoon to explore the charming city located at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and the IIz rivers, visiting the old town centre and Passau Cathedral. Back on board in the early evening you will start your cruise through the beautiful Danube valley (departs at 6pm).

Day 2

Engelhartszell to Aschach: 26 miles (42km). The first cycle ride of your holiday takes you through the classic scenery of the “Great Loop” of Donauschlinge. Here you will see some of the most beautiful scenery along the Danube, passing through small villages with cosy taverns and visit the Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell, where you can taste local liquors and cheese. The route to your stop for the evening, the market town of Aschach, passes the “Scholgener View”, providing spectacular views.

Day 3

Devin to Bratislava: 27 miles (43km). Leaving Devin’s castle ruins behind, today we follow the former ‘Iron Curtain’, crossing the former border and reaching the imposing Baroque Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. From here we cycle through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, the coronation city and former capital of Hungary. Explore the hidden alleyways of Bratislava on an optional city tour.

Day 4

Budapest to Szentendre: 34 miles (54km)/Rest Day. Today you will reach Budapest, the stunning capital of Hungary. You can discover the grand city on an optional guided bike tour or choose to relax and explore the highlights such as the Royal Palace or even the traditional thermal baths. You can also choose to cycle to the lovely town of Szentendre which has a rich artistic heritage. In the evening, there is an optional show with traditional music, food and dance.

Day 5

Danube Bend to Esztergom: 27 miles (43km). Departing Budapest, you will cycle along the famous Danube Bend, one of the most picturesque parts of the Danube, through several historical towns such as tiny Visegrad, Hungary’s Camelot from the 15th Century, on the way to Esztergom home to Hungary’s largest Catholic Church.

Day 6

Vienna. We’ve allowed a whole day to explore this amazing city. Take to the streets and explore, or opt for a city tour by bike or bus. The architecture here is incredible: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and, of course, the colourful “Hundertwasserhaus”. Grab a bite in a classic Viennese café, or dine in style at one of the city’s many restaurants.

Day 7

Wachau/Krems to Melk: 23 miles (37km). Today offers a wonderful last’s days cycling, which meanders through an enchanting land of dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards, castles and monasteries. On route, you will pass a foreboding ruin looming above the small baroque town of Durnstein in the Wachau valley. We suggest wine-tasting in Weißenkirchen.

Day 8

Before we say “Auf Wiedersehen” you will cruise to Passau before transferring you to Munich (after 11.30am).
