Bike and Boat Holidays
Our favourite short breaks for groups
A walking or cycling holiday is the perfect excuse for spending time with friends and family, and can be a great team bonding exercise, ideal for corporate trips. Go on a unique adventure and reconnect with nature, from Bavarian woodland to terracotta Tuscan hills. Here are our top three short break destinations for groups, taking in welcoming hotels and delicious local cuisine.
This idyllic 5-day tour explores the turquoise waters of Lake Achensee, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense alpine forest. Children will love swimming in the lake and there's also the opportunity to take an exciting journey on one of Austria's oldest steam trains, the Achensee Steam Cog Railway. Adults will appreciate the ride too, tucked safely into one of the train's charming painted carriages. Just remember to bring your camera as the views are spectacular.
The second stop on the tour, historic village Pertisau, is ideal to explore as a group, whether you're planning to relax on a boat trip, sightsee at the mediaeval cathedral or just stroll around the old streets, stopping occasionally to refresh with a smooth beer or some traditional pine schnapps. Corporate groups can learn fishing, challenge one another to a tennis tournament or work on their golf game at the oldest club in the region.
Taking in Tuscany's lesser-known gems, this 5-day tour includes a night in a recently converted thirteenth century castle, which children will enjoy exploring while adults relax in the restaurant. Watch the stars from the open air, flower-lined courtyard, and sample Tuscan delicacies like rich white truffle and tangy pecorino cheese.
The final stop is in wine country, famous for producing sharp, aromatic Chianti. Wine tasting is a fun, interesting challenge ideal for groups of friends, and corporate parties will also enjoy the challenge. If you're planning a corporate trip, other great team bonding opportunities include horse riding or rustic cookery lessons. A more unusual option is the Truffle Museum in the picturesque San Giovanni d'Asso, which will teach you everything you'll ever need to know about truffles.
This 5-day cycling tour lets you experience the best of both worlds, meandering through Bavarian villages and the spectacular Tyrolean countryside. The first stop, little town Kochel, is right by a clear lake surrounded by open meadows and steeper pine woods, leading up to snow-capped mountains. It's ideal for big groups or families with diverse interests; tanners can sunbathe, children can swim and adventure-seekers can try their hand at windsurfing. After an activity-filled day, get together over dinner in the Hotel Alpenhof Postillion's restaurant, Zum Wuiderer, which serves local specialties like freshly baked apple strudel, or fish with wild garlic, grown in the hotel's farm.
Groups of friends and corporate parties alike will enjoy the hotel's spa and wellness facilities, as well as the opulent Turkish hammam in Hotel Garmischer Hof in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There is also a number of memorable team building options in the surrounding area, from paragliding over plumes of steam from local thermal activity to segway tours through the streets and surrounding countryside.
