Bavarian Alps & Lakes | Self Guided

Day 1

Arrive at Bad Tölz.

A stroll around Bad Tölz will enable you to discover some of Germany’s most typical Alpine architecture. This quiet, rural town is well known for its mild climate and its ability to maintain a charming, traditional way of life. Here, you can walk down the narrow, cobbled lanes and along the Isar river in complete tranquillity, before stopping off at the Hotel Kolberbräu.

Day 2

Bad Tölz to Bad Wiessee | Distance 11.25 miles (18 km)

A short train-ride to Lenggries will open-up onto a trail leading you into the heart of the Bavarian Alps. The Via Alpina track will guide you through the Hirschtal-col, over Mount Fockenstein, all the way to Aueralm. Enjoy the breath-taking views onto the Lake Tegernsee as you descend into Bad Wiessee. On the way there, make sure you take a break (‘Pausenbrot’), and enjoy the best of German delicacies.

Day 3

Round Tour to Mount Riederstein | Distance 5.5 miles (9 km)

Make the most of the Alpine views as you hike over altitude paths. A stop at the mountain inn Galaun and at the mountain chapel on the rock formation of Mount Riederstein is scheduled for you to stop and appreciate this  Bavarian legacy. This tour also includes a magnificent view of the lake and onto the surrounding mountains. Once back on the lake the Tegernsee Brewery Inn invites to a cool beverage before you return with the Tegernsee-ship to Bad Wiessee.

Day 4

Bad Wiessee to Lake Schliersee | Distance 8 miles (12 km)

On day four you will experience Bavaria’s unique landscapes and culture by walking through green pastures all the way to the well-known Alpine beer garden Neureuth. Today, your walk continues through the forest paths and roads and then leads you to Lake Schliersees. After seeing the marina, you will reach the pretty spa park situated directly at the lakeside.

Day 5

Round Tour to Lake Spitzingsee | Distance 8 miles (13 km)

Make your way around Bavaria’s largest mountain lake (28 hectares), and experience the romantic dark forests surrounding it. The Bockerlbahnweg will take you over the col Spitzingsattel all the way to the nature idyll. At the end of this eight mile walk, the friendly staff of the historic Wurzhütte chalet will be waiting to serve you, before your return by bus to Schliersee.

Day 6

Lake Schliersee to Bayrischzell | Distance 9 miles (15 km)

A light and airy cable car ride takes you to the summit station on Mount Taubenstein. Then you walk on a high-altitude path with brilliant views to the Rotwandhaus, where you have the opportunity to climb to the peak of the Rotwand if you fancy. Onwards via the picturesque cirque ’Großtiefentaler Kessel’ to Lake Soinsee with its idyllic location, then along Alpine pastures and flowering meadows to Bayrischzell.

Day 7

Round Trip onto Mount Wendelstein (3.1 miles/5km).

The King-Maximilian-path leads you past a waterfall to the Wendelstein-Alp. From there you walk all the way to the summit with its impressive meteorological observatory and along the panorama-loop-path to the Wendelstein cave with its accessible underground tunnels. After a snack in the panorama beer garden, you take the cable car back into the valley and casually walk back to Bayrischzell.

Day 8

Individual departure by train from Bayrischzell to Bad Tölz, or there’s the option to add on some extra days. As the Bavarians would say, “Wiedershauen” – hoping to see you again.

This tour is operated by our preferred local partner.
