8 Day Tour

Day 1

Arrival in Zürich. If you have the chance explore some of the sites of the city. Delve into the culture; observe the fantastic architecture such as the churches, that dominate the skyline of the city or visit one of the many fantastic museums or perhaps take a relaxing boat trip around Lake Zurich.

Day 2

7km (2h 30min). Leave Zurich on your transfer which will take you to the start of the Albula route via Thusis and where you will begin your hike at Bergün. This area of the Swiss landscape is simply breath-taking. It took many tunnels, bridges and viaducts to conquer the landscape because of the drastic differences in altitudes over the distance of the line. Consequently, the hiking route which follows the railway line multiple times, is one of the most impressive in Switzerland.

Look out for the juxtaposition between man-made and nature when you see the amazing engineering feats contrast with natural wonders and which gives this area and the Bernina Express its unique appeal. Your final stop of the day is Preda, where you will stay overnight.

Day 3

12km (4h 30min). Start your day in Preda and depart on a picturesque journey over the the Albulapass to Spinas.  Depart Preda on a picturesque journey over the Albulapass to Spinas. If you choose to walk this section, it can be a little steep but the views are well worth it. Once you get to Spinas, you could jump on a regional train from here to make the most of the surrounding landscapes and give your legs a rest as you make a short but spectacular train journey to St. Moritz. Once you have reached St. Moritz make time to have a look around, it is an area that due to its location enjoys over 300 sunny days each year and the luxurious ski resort has lots of lavish shops and restaurants and it is a popular tourist destination in both the winter and summer months.

Day 4

11km (4h). This part of the tour will take the Bernina Route and your fourth day will take you from St. Moritz to Alp Grüm. The first part of the trip will be by train and will give you a taste of the Bernina Line by rail. After this journey, you will next hike the remaining part which will be the Bernina Pass to Alp Grüm, which is a real gem and a great photo opportunity. Spend the night above the famous circular routes of the Bernina Express.

Day 5

10 km (3h 30m). Alp Grüm to Poschiavo. The train is a short ride from Alp Grüm to Poschiavo, or you can walk along the route which would take significantly longer but has terrific scenery. Poschiavo is well worth spending some time exploring, it is an area of Switzerland which has heavy Italian influence. The Italian character is seen particularly through the architecture; such as the stone-roofed patrician houses dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. The central Plaza da Cumün is bordered by the San Vittore Church which has impressive Romanesque towers. There are many great restaurants in the centre, which combine the Swiss and Italian cuisines to great effect.

Day 6

14 km (3h 50m). Today you will have the chance to venture into Italy (you will need your passport) by travelling from Poschiavo to Tirano. A Mediterranean influenced rail journey takes you to Miralago, where you will then walk to the Italian town of Tirano.  Tirano sits at the entrance of the Swiss Valposchiavo, where the northern and southern Alps meet. The town is full of history, if you cross over the river you can enter through an original old gate in the medieval wall. After exploring, return to Poschiavo on a relaxing train route.

Day 7

The last day of your journey will be a leisurely one and a chance to take a longer rail journey to fully appreciate the sights you have seen. Depart Poschiavo on regional trains and take the time to relax and enjoy the views out of the window and once again marvel at the engineering masterpiece of this route as you climb steep hills and pass through winding valleys back along the Bernina and Albula train lines to Thusis.

Day 8

Depart from Thusis by taxi or minibus to your chosen airport.
