8 Day Tour

Day 1

Arrive at Amsterdam and transfer to the De Amsterdam, your home for the next week. We suggest that you try to arrive early and explore the canals, museums, art galleries and shops in this fantastic city or take a canal tour to see the capital from a different perspective.

Day 2

As you are enjoying a relaxing breakfast onboard, the boat will cruise to Breukelen, where you will be fitted to your bike and start cycling down the River Vecht to Utrecht through the flat Dutch countryside punctuated by windmills, castles and mansions built by Amsterdam merchants (15 miles/25 kms or 25 miles/40 kms). On arrival in Utrecht, you will be able to explore the Dom Cathedral tower and the medieval village centre which is surrounded by canals. Later in the afternoon onboard the boat, you will travel to Rotterdam where you can take a short walking tour of the city before dinner.

Day 3

Today’s circular route takes you from Rotterdam to Schiedam, the city famous for jenever which is the traditional Dutch gin on route to the famous city of Delft (30 miles/50 kms). The popular city of Delft has an exquisite medieval centre, superb architecture and network of pretty canals. Delft is famous for its blue and white pottery and it is well worth visiting one of the Royal Delft factories as well as the Vermeer Centrum Delft celebrating the work of the Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer. You will then cycle back to Rotterdam, when the boat will travel to Dordrecht providing the chance to stroll around the town before dinner.

Day 4

The morning will start with a cruise to Kinderdijk, famous for its 19 windmills which make up this UNESCO World Heritage site. From there you have the choice of a longer cycle ride visiting the beautiful city of Gouda, famous of course for its cheese (32 miles/50 kms) or a shorter ride through the Albasserwaard (18 miles/30 kms). The destination for both routes is the silver city of Schoonhoven on the Lek river, where you can visit a silversmith and enjoy a free evening city walk through the town.

Day 5

Today’s cycle starts from Schoonhoven and travels through the “Green Heart” of Holland via Oudewater, where we recommend a stop at the Witches Weigh House on route to Utrecht (27 miles/45 kms or 33 miles/55 kms). On the way you will also be able to stop at a traditional cheese farm where you can buy some local and delicious Gouda cheese. Once you are back onboard, the boat will travel to Beverwijk, while you enjoy some live music.

Day 6

There are two choices of cycle route today both finishing in the historic city of Haarlem. The longer of the two takes you to the North Sea coastline and sand dunes via Bloemendaal and Zandoort (33 miles/55 kms), while the shorter route leads you inland to Haarlem (27 miles/45 kms). Before cycling back to Beverwijk, enjoy the cobbled streets, museums, cafes and market square of Haarlem. In the evening the boat will sail on to Zaandam.

Day 7

Your final day’s cycling will take you from Zaandam to Amsterdam with the opportunity to visit the open-air museum called Zaanse Schans which features beautiful windmills, an old Dutch village, a cheese farm and a traditional wooden clog maker (21 miles/35 kms). You will cycle through Twiske before reaching Amsterdam with time to further explore this artistic city.

Day 8

After breakfast, we say “Dag” before you return from Amsterdam.
