Walk and cycle the paths of the stars

Posted 22 Sep 2017

From dark comedy In Bruges to fantasy drama Game of Thrones, the breathtaking landscapes and enchanting cities of Europe have long been a favourite of film and TV directors. Here are our six top tours where you can recreate the magic of the silver screen.

1. Amsterdam: Ocean’s Twelve

Retrace the steps of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon in Ocean's Twelve as you cycle through central Amsterdam on our Charms of Holland tour. Inhale the sweet scent of tulips at the Keukenhof Gardens and admire the tall, elegant canal houses reflected in the Amstel River. Visit the Pulitzer Hotel situated in the heart of The Nine Streets, a bustling canalside enclave filled with designer boutiques, art galleries and cafes – including the Dampkring coffee shop where the infamous Matsui scene was shot.

2. St Moritz & Lake Como: Star Wars Episode II

Our St Moritz and Lake Como cycling tour takes you out into the heart of the Swiss Alps where you can catch a glimpse of one of Switzerland's most traditional regions. You'll cycle past dramatic sun-kissed mountain views and stop off for peaceful lunches in quaint alpine villages. Take a romantic trip for two to The Villa del Balbianello on serene Lake Como, the setting for Anakin and Padme’s wedding, which is accessible by boat from the village of Lenno.

3. Bruges: In Bruges

Our Amsterdam to Bruges tour winds in a southwesterly direction through the charming towns of Gouda, Vlissingen and Damme. You’ll then head down to Bruges where you can indulge in the finer things on offer in Belgium – the sand dunes on the Flanders Coast, the fine nature reserves, and, of course, the cheese. At the small and intimate Huidenvettersplein Square, relive the In Bruges scene where Ray chases Harry from the Markt (the market square) to the Vismarkt (the old fish market).

4. Dubrovnik: Game of Thrones

Pass through the enchanting town of Dubrovnik, which was transformed into one of the locations for medieval fantasy Game of Thrones, on our Adriatic Coasts and Islands Walking Tour. Rugged stone walls and imposing medieval gates define one of the continent’s most magnificent walled cities. Brimming with culture, it has all the charm of the Mediterranean, with the deep blue Adriatic sea, gothic buildings and gemstone-like limestone-paved streets.

5. Tuscany: Gladiator

Discover lush, rolling hills and perfectly preserved medieval villages on our Tuscany and Chianti Hills E-Bike Safari. You'll wind your way along cypress-lined paths before visiting the iconic wheat fields of Gladiator, between San Quirico and Pienza. Nestled among olive groves is the Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which dates back to the 12th century. You'll also have the chance to samples some of the grapes you've been cycling past, with wine tasting sessions on six of the seven days of the tour.

6. Sicily: The talented Mr Ripley

Our Sicilian experience tour curves around the southeast coast of the island, starting in the Baroque town of Caltagirone, which is renowned for its vibrant ceramic tiles. The final destination on the tour is culturally rich Syracuse, which was once the capital of Greece. Sicily is also home to the ‘Venetian’ church used in The Talented Mr Ripley. The church is known more locally as the Chiesa Martorana or Concattedrale Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglioin, and can be found in the vibrant Palermo, the regional capital of Sicily.
