This tour along the sparkling Portuguese coast follows the Ecovia do litoral (Eco-Way), that links Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border with Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres) in the west. Meandering across stunning nature-protected terrain, pottering around charming fishing villages and beautiful beaches, you'll enjoy getting to know a very diverse coastline - diving into the shining ocean whenever you desire.
Arrive at Faro airport. Transfer by minibus or taxi to your hotel in Vila Real de Santo Antonio where you will be equipped with your bicycle. You'll have ample time to then acclimatise by pottering around Vila Real de Santo Antonio’s pleasant streets that radiate from the town square towards the lovely sandy beach.
Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Tavira: 19 miles (31km). Your first day in the saddle starts near to the Spanish boarder and heads west towards Tavira, a charming old fishing town founded in Roman times. The route follows the beautiful coastline, with wonderful ocean views all the way. We suggest stopping at Cacela Velha, an unspoilt village of whitewashed buildings and an 18th century fort perched on a low cliff facing the estuary. The views from here are quite something. Arriving in Tavira, this is one of the most interesting and attractive towns in the Algarve, straddling the Rio Gilão (river). There's lots to explore here as you wander the cobblestone streets: the ruins of a hilltop castle, an ancient Roman bridge, Gothic and Renaissance churches, historic gardens and shady plazas with lovely cafés and restaurants. and away from the bustle, yet conveniently close - the superb beach of Ilha de Tavira.
Tavira to Olhão: 19 miles (31km). Today’s ride continues west, passing through unspoilt coastal countryside and quaint fishing villages. Your destination is Olhão, still the hub of the fishing industry with a charming old town, renowned for its Moorish style architecture. The waterfront is buzzing with activity - you can watch the fishermen hauling in what could be your dinner at one of the town's popular fish restaurants. This is a great place to sample the fruits of the sea at local prices, washed down with a glass of Vino Verde (the famous Portuguese young wine)!
Olhão to Vilamoura: 25 miles (40km). Today you'll approach the heart of the Algarve, cycling past the regional centre of Faro to Vilamoura. This is beautiful and diverse part of the route, taking you through salt flats, past beautiful beaches and prestigious resorts, and the seafront at Quarteira. Vilamoura is one of the most luxurious resorts on the coastline. While it's not a traditional Algarve town (but rather a modern, purpose-built resort), it's a fabulous place to make the most of the sunshine, enjoy wonderful food at a wide variety of restaurants, potter the shops and bars, or simply amble around the marina marvelling at the luxury yachts bobbing about on the water.
Vilamoura to Praia da Rocha: 34 miles (55km). Waking up feeling refreshed amidst the luxury of Vilamoura, you'll enjoy a slightly longer ride today. The route takes you through the popular resort of Albufeira (tourists love it, so if you like a bit of bustle, you might enjoy a drinks-break here), before heading slightly inland and through the traditional old town of Lagoa. From here it's on to Portimão and Praia da Rocha, via lots of enticing places to stop and sample grilled sardines and Pastel de Nata (traditional Portuguese custard tarts). After your efforts in the saddle you'll be rewarded with a fantastic beach to laze about on in Praia da Rocha, sandwiched between high sandstone cliffs and the sparkling crystal-clear ocean.
Praia da Rocha to Praia da Luz: 24 miles (39km). Today the route takes you through the fishing village of Alvor, bursting with colourful fishing boats, towards bustling Lagos, where we suggest you stop for lunch. Another of the most attractive and historical towns in the Algarve, Lagos has a pretty centre, cobbled lanes and charming piazzas surrounded by 16th century walls. From here you leave town along the old coastal road towards the popular coastal resort of Praia da Luz. There are lots of cafés and shops along the promenade and often market stalls and artists displaying their work, so it’s worth getting here in time to explore.
Praia da Luz to Cabo de São Vicente: 24 miles (39km) then taxi to Loulé. Your final cycling day takes you through some dramatic scenery towards the southernmost point of Europe, the spectacular Cabo de São Vicente. The nearby town of Sagres with its ancient fort is also well worth exploring. After your ride, we transfer you by taxi you to a quaint hotel set in a quiet square in the heart of the old market town of Loulé, near to Faro. Loulé is an explorer’s haven, with its narrow cobbled streets leading off the central Avenida, tiny shops and secluded bars and restaurants - a great little spot for your final night celebratory dinner.
Today we say “Adeus” before transferring you back to Faro airport by train or minibus.
