A dreamy cruise along this serene European river, visiting four different countries as you go, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Begin in Munich, drifting along to Bratislava then beautiful Vienna and taking the Danube loop, ending back in Munich. With lots to explore on land by bike - from glorious gardens, castles and valley paths.
Arrive at Munich. Transfer by minibus or taxi to Passau, where you’ll board your boat and be equipped with your bicycle. You’ll have time this afternoon to explore the charming ‘city of three rivers’ and sample its alluring Bavarian beer gardens, before re-boarding the boat in the early evening to begin our cruise through the beautiful Danube Valley.
Mauthausen to Grein: 22 miles (35km). Today we’ll cycle beside the gorgeous meadows that line the Danube. Points of interest along the way include the medieval village and former concentration camp at Mauthausen, and the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen. There’s an alternative route through the beautiful back-country of the ‘Strudengau’ which is slightly hilly but offers fantastic scenery. Grein, with its mighty castle, is your final destination today, before embarking on a blissful sunset cruise to Devin.
Devin to Bratislava: 27 miles (43km). Leaving Devin’s castle ruins behind, today we follow the former ‘Iron Curtain’, crossing the former border and reaching the imposing Baroque Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. From here we cycle through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to Bratislava, the coronation city and former capital of Hungary. Explore the hidden alleyways of Bratislava on an optional city tour.
Vienna. We’ve allowed a whole day to explore this amazing city. Take to the streets and explore, or opt for a city tour by bike or bus. The architecture here is incredible: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and, of course, the colourful “Hundertwasserhaus”. Grab a bite in a classic Viennese café, or dine in style at one of the city’s many restaurants.
Wachau/Krems to Melk: 23 miles (37km). Today’s cycling meanders through an enchanting land of dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards, castles, monasteries, via a foreboding ruin looming above the small baroque town of Durnstein in the Wachau valley. We suggest wine-tasting in Weißen.
Melk to Grein: miles (50km). After breakfast there’s time to visit the gorgeous baroque monastery of the Benedictine brethren of Melk, before cycling into the wide valleys of the Nibelungengau, following the Danube into the city of Grein, home of Austria’s oldest city theatre.
Obermühl to Engelhartszell: 16 miles (25km). Passing through many picturesque villages along the Danube, you’ll smell freshly grilled mackerel emanating from the riverside pubs. We suggest heading to the lookout high above the Danube Loop for a breathtaking panoramic view of the river valley.
Sit back and relax on a final cruise back to Passau, where we say “Auf Wiedersehen” before transferring you to Munich by minibus or taxi.
