This spectacular trip follows Spain’s longest river, the Ebro, from its source in the Cantabrian mountains through green valleys, magnificent canyons and some of Spain’s undiscovered and most beautiful villages. Arriving in La Rioja, famed for its fine wine, this tour passes through vineyards, traditional villages and past ancient castles, providing a unique view of this relatively undiscovered region.
Day 1 | Arrive at Bilbao or Santander
Transfer to your first hotel in the town of Campoo located in the High Ebro where you will be met by your representative and set up with your bike for the week before dinner.
Day 2 | Cycle Campoo to Polientes | Distance 38 miles (59km)
Your first day in the saddle takes your through some fabulous and untouched scenery from the green landscapes of the Cantabrian mountains and along the edge of the Ebro Reservoir with the chance to stop and visit the tranquil Monastery of Montesclaros. The route then follows the Ebro again, along the Valley of Valderredible before reaching Polientes your stop for tonight’s dinner. There is a longer version of the route available which circles the Ebro Reservoir (61 miles/97 km).
Day 3 | Cycle Polientes to Pesquera de Ebro | Distance 27 miles (43km)
Today the route continues through the valley of Valderredible following the river past churches carved into the rock, such as the Romanesque church of San Martin de Elines, which are characteristic of the region. You will also be able to visit Orbaneja del Castillo, a stunningly picturesque village, surrounded by rocky cliffs with a waterfall running through its centre. As you approach the pretty village of Pesquera, you’ll cycle through striking canyons created by the River Ebro.
Day 4 | Cycle Pesquera de Ebro to Medina de Pomar | Distance 23 miles (36km) or 39 miles (63km)
The lovely route follows the huge bend of the Ebro through peaceful and undiscovered villages and on to the Castillian town of Medina de Pomar. There is the opportunity to extend the route by riding to the spectacular village of Puentedy which is located on a rock overlooking the River Nela. Enjoy a pre-dinner stroll and visit the castle and old Jewish quarter in Medina de Pomar.
Day 5 | Cycle Medina de Pomar to Frias | Distance 36 miles (58km)
Re-joining the Ebro valley, the route takes you along quiet country roads which hug the river until your reach the rich fertile plains around your stop for the night in Frias. On route you can visit the 12th Century Church of San Pedro de Tejada. Frias is considered the smallest ‘city’ in Spain but is a medieval village built around a castle with impressive valley views.
Day 6 | Cycle Frias to Haro | Distance 39 miles (62 km)
Departing Frias, your cycle route follows a spectacular canyon and the shores of a reservoir surrounded by high mountains with time for a coffee stop at Miranda del Ebro before passing into the huge open valley of La Rioja. Your destination for tonight is the wine producing village of Haro and your first chance to taste a glass of Rioja from its source!
Day 7 | Cycle Haro to Laguardia | Distance 15 miles (25km) or 31 miles (50km)
Your final day on tour, takes your through endless vineyards and many beautiful wine villages of La Rioja. The landscape of la Rioja offers stunning views of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains and of course the River Ebro itself as you pedal toward the walled medieval village of Laguardia, a picture postcard Basque town surrounded by vineyards. Stock up on some of the regions best Rioja before leaving!
Day 8 | Departure
We say “adios” before your transfer to Bilbao or Santander at 9am.
