The Laos borders were closed until the 1970's and still remains relatively undiscovered by tourists and untouched by major development, especially when you compare it to neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand.
But with its beautiful forested hills, lined by waterfalls and spectacular limestone karst scenery, Laos is quickly becoming a hot activity holiday destination. Still home to quiet indigenous tribes that slip in and out of jungles and in the far north especially, the traditional way of life continues, oblivious to the rest of the world.
Buddhism is the ruling religion here and typifies the tranquil atmosphere of this beautiful country. Make sure you try Baci, a delicious vegetarian feast and bracelets-tying ceremony that blesses people with a healthy life or Tak Bat, an alms-giving ceremony where meditating monks collect offerings from local people at dawn.
After a peaceful day spent at padogas and temples, head back to the city of Vientiane where night markets bustle and come alive with a plethora of food stalls with many delicacies on offer.
