Your cycling holiday in Spain

The Best of Catalonia | Self Guided | Short Break

The region of Baix Empordà, set on the coast of Catalonia, between Barcelona to the south and the Pyrenees to the north, has a unique charm and atmosphere, unlike anywhere else in Spain. Rugged coastlines skirt the aquamarine waters of the Mediterranean, whilst lush green fields blanket the landscape inland. This 4-night tour takes in the best of both features, with time spent in charming, sun baked medieval villages as well as along the coastline, punctuated by secluded bays and beaches. Be prepared for ancient olive groves, secluded beach coves and a vibrant and welcoming population.

The Best of Catalonia | Self Guided | Short Break

Day 1 | Arrival at Girona or Barcelona airports

Girona arrivals will be transferred from the airport to the first hotel by our local representatives. Arrivals at Barcelona airport will take a high-speed train to Flaca, before being collected. Your first hotel is situated in the stunning medieval village of Peratallada, the perfect base for exploring Baix Empordà’s other charming settlements. Upon arrival you will have a welcome briefing and bike fitting, before being left to explore this gorgeous village.

Day 2 | Round Trip to Pubol | Distance 28 miles (46 km)

After a good night’s sleep in your charming, boutique hotel, today sees you set off on two wheels to explore the local area. The route will take you through lush farmlands to the town of Pubol, home to the Dali Gala Museum. This museum, set in a fittingly bizarre building, is a haven of surrealism and home to a number of Salvador Dali’s own works, a real must see. Onwards, you will passthrough the villages of Corca and Ullastret, where a more traditional set of sights and sounds will greet you, before returning to Peratallada for the evening.

Day 3 | Cycle to Palamos | Distance 26 miles (42 km)

After a hearty buffet breakfast, it’s time to get the wheels turning again as you head towards the coastline and the fishing town of Palamos. Heading north-east, your first stop is the village of Fontclara before the route takes you on to Pals. We suggest a short break from cycling here to take a walk up to El Pedro to visit the grand church and to take in the spectacular views of the region. After a bit more pedaling, you will reach Palamos, where you will be spoilt for choice for restaurants serving the catch of the day.

Day 4 | Round Trip to La Fosca, Castells and Calonge | Distance 23 miles (36 km)

On day 4 it is the coastlines time to shine. Your route will take you to the picturesque coves of La Fosca and Castells, where the clear, blue waters will no doubt lure you in for a refreshing swim. After drying off, you will take a south westerly route towards the vineyards of Calonge, where a tasting of the local produce is highly recommended. A short spin back into Palamos remains before a final night making the most of all this charming town has to offer.

Day 5 | Departure

We say “Adios” before transferring you to Girona or Barcelona airport.
