This is one of the big challenges. You’ll ride two different routes up one of the Tour de France's most iconic mountains. Standing at 1912m, Mont Ventoux is known as the 'Giant of Provence', a mass of bare limestone rock that dominates the region and can be seen from miles around. This region boasts some of the best cycling in the world and the Mont Ventoux ride has become famously associated with the Tour de France, featuring 14 times since 1951. On day two you will tackle the climb from Bedoin, passing the Tommy Simpson memorial along the way. On day three you will climb from Malaucene with its spectacular views over the Rhône Valley below.

Day 1

Arrival in Sault | Distance 23 miles (38km) | Elevation +520m.

The tour will begin in Sault, located at the foot of Mont Ventoux. Your day will start with a short warm up ride south west from Sault through the Provencal countryside around Monieux. In the evening there will be a welcome meeting with your Tour Leader and the opportunity to discuss the route in more detail.

Meals included: none

Day 2

Mont Ventoux Climb – Bedoin Route | Distance 65 miles (105km).

Today you will cycle up iconic Mont Ventoux. The ride starts with a lovely descent that winds itself through the magnificent Gorges de la Nesque. This is a super ride in its own right, but only the start of today's excitement. Arriving in Bedoin you can stop for a coffee break (refuel) before starting the climb up Mont Ventoux (1912m) by the most famous Tour de France route. It will be a challenge as the road climbs for 21.5km at an average of 7.5% to the summit. The final 5km are tough with pitches as steep as 10.7 %! You'll have earnt a celebratory drink at the top. A scenic 30km descent takes us back to Sault, quite possibly for another celebratory drink.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 3

Mont Ventoux Climb – Malaucene Route | Distance 62 miles (100km) | Elevation +2000m.

After s proper breakfast you will set out on the bikes to take on Ventoux for the second time! Todays route will be the less ridden and equally beautiful ascent from Malaucene. The first part of the ride is mainly downhill as you follow a balcony road in the foot hills of Ventoux before arriving in the town of Malaucene. Here you can stop for a coffee and snack break (refuel) before starting the climb up Ventoux. The ascent from this side has an average gradient of 7.2% and rises 1535m over the 21.2km. From the summit you will have an exhilarating 35km of downhill all the way back to the hotel in Sault.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 4

End in Sault | Distance 41 miles (65km).

For the final day of the tour you will have the option to head out on a short ride before the airport transfer. The route follows a road to the south of the Nesque gorges through small traditional towns like Saint-Jean and Methamis before turning and climbing up the Nesque Gorge road back to Sault. This climb is 19.7km long with a total elevation of 444m at an average gradient of 2.3% making it a perfect finale.

We say “au revoir” and “à bientôt”.

Suitability

Minimum age 16.

The riding on this trip can be accomplished by any fit cyclist, but it is as much a state of mind as your fitness that will see you up and over the cols. The secret to making it up the mountains is to spin away at a steady pace and stop whenever you feel tired. We cover the same routes as the Tour de France but this trip is definitely not a race!

The roads are good quality - they just aren't flat! Although the gradients do not get much steeper than 10%, they can be long. Daily distances are realistic, and there are plenty of opportunities for stronger riders to add more kilometres if they wish.

Bikes

Pinarello Gan full carbon drop bar road bikes available on request.
Bike hire should be arranged at the time of booking and the cost will be added to your invoice. We will take your height to reserve equipment.
