The legendary Danube has flowed through numerous empires, kingdoms and principalities. This cycle tour through four Central European countries is a great way to access some of the history. You’ll ride through the varied landscapes of the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

This tour combines peaceful country lanes with well-marked cycle paths, including sections along the Danube, to showcase the best of Central Europe. Our itinerary meanders past castles, through rustic villages, along rivers and past lakes as we discover the former territories of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Highlights include UNESCO sites, national parks and the famous wine-making region of Moravia.

Exploring the gentle countryside, rural towns and historic capitals by bike is a great way to sample the changing atmosphere and individual flavours of each region.

Prague to Budapest | Guided Group

Day 1

Arrival in Prague.

Your tour commences in Prague, the Czech Republic's capital, in the late afternoon. A short walking tour is included in the evening before you head out for dinner. If you wish to explore this beautiful city in more detail, then talk to one of our experts about booking an extra night pre-tour or requesting an earlier arrival time.

Day 2

From Prague to Cesky Krumlov | Distance 20 miles (32km).

It’s a short transfer to Ceske Budejovice where you will collect your bikes. The first ride is to Cesky Krumlov on the Vltava River. A feature of the old town here is the narrow, crooked streets and the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. There may be time to visit Cesky Krumlov Castle, one of the largest in Central Europe, which overlooks the town from its strategic position on a horseshoe bend in the river.

Day 3

From Cesky Krumlov to Jindrichuv Hradec | Distance 43 miles (70 km).

Leaving Cesky Krumlov behind you will initially head out into more hilly countryside. The route flattens out as you enter the Trebon Basin, a lowland area of forests, meadows and lakes. Your destination will be Trebon, a medieval town of Renaissance architecture, now also known as a spa town. There is also a neo-gothic tomb set in an English-style park plus a good number of cafes and restaurants in which to relax and enjoy a hearty meal. Many local dishes here make use of the famous Trebon Carp. We transfer you to your hotel in Jindrichuv Hradec.

Day 4

From Jindrichuv Hradec to Znojmo | Distance 43 miles (70km).

On todays ride you follow sections of the Greenways Trail, part of a network of hiking and cycling trails in the Czech Republic and Austria. The ride finishes at the Renaissance town of Telc which was registered on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List in 1992. From here you will transfer to Znojmo on the banks of the river Dyje, considered to be the gateway to the wine-making area of South Moravia.

Day 5

From Znojmo to Mikulov | Distance 39 miles (63km).

You’ll pedal through the rich fertile flatland of the region of Moravia, home to an abundance of vineyards and wine cellars. You will cycle to Mikulov, a real gem located directly on the border with Lower Austria. Worth visiting are the town's pretty castle, the town square and the surrounding architecture. In the evening you will enjoy a wine tasting. Overnight in Mikulov.

Day 6

Mikulov to Vienna | Distance 34 miles (55km).

The day will start off by entering Austria through the UNESCO grounds of Lednice, known as the 'Versailles' of Southern Moravia; we continue to the wine-producing town of Poysdorf, from where you will transfer to Vienna. Once checked into your accommodation, the city centre awaits, just a short metro ride away. Austria's capital is a hive of architecture, history and culture with a lively café and bar scene and a great range of restaurants.

Day 7

Discover Vienna.

Day seven is a free day to explore the beautiful and former imperial city of Vienna. Its old cultural centre is bursting with historic and architectural wonders as it was the former capital of the Hapsburg Empire. The city is brimming with sights for all tastes including the majestic Schoenbrunn Palace, the popular Kunsthistoriches Museum and Hundertwasser Hause as well as countless breathtaking churches, cathedrals and concert halls! No visit to Vienna is complete without a famous “Kaffee und Kuchen” (cake and coffee), or simply a visit of one of Vienna's many parks or beer gardens.

Day 8

From Vienna to Bratislava | Distance 43 miles (70km).

You join the Danube Cycle Path, following a quiet route out of the city and into the Donauauen National Park, past the red-tiled turrets of Castle Orth and the chateau at Eckartsau. You will cross in to Slovakia at the town of Hainburg. We will wind our way to the capital Bratislava, strategically positioned on the Danube.

Day 9

From Bratislava to Esztergom | Distance 36 miles (58km).

There us free time in the morning to explore Bratislava. Wander the narrow-cobbled streets of the charming old town. Due to its strategic position on the Danube, Slovakia’s capital has been an important economic, cultural and political hub of Central Europe. Later on in the day, it’s back on to the bikes and across the border into Hungary, cycling through peaceful rolling countryside before arriving in Hedervar, a small village of around 2000 inhabitants. From here we will transfer to our hotel in the pretty town of Esztergom.

Day 10

From Esztergom to Budapest | Distance 28 miles (45km).

Today’s route begins with a 3-mile section of a cycle path along the banks of the Danube before joining the road. Your ride meanders over rolling countryside and through rural villages until you reach Vac. From here you will transfer to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, famous for being blessed with many hot springs and their delicious 'Magyar' cuisine. The remainder of the day is free to explore this grand city situated majestically on the Danube. Budapest is a history & architecture lover's dream to explore. It offers an eclectic mix of attractions such as the Szechenyi Baths (Europe's largest medicinal bath), Fisherman's Bastion for breathtaking views of the Danube and Parliament building, the House of Horrors museum where you can learn about the city's dark past during Communist times or simply enjoy a glass of one of Hungary's excellent wines in a local café and soak up the atmosphere of a truly unique European capital.

End in Budapest.

Minimum age 16.

8 days of cycling, with approximately 3 to 6 hours cycling per day. The route is undulating and requires a reasonable level of fitness. There is full vehicle support, minimising the amount you need to carry, and giving the option of a rest should it be needed. However, please be aware that there are some sections (approx. 10%) where the vehicle cannot follow the group, for instance along narrow forest cycle paths or through vineyards. We aim to use mainly quiet roads and cycle paths where possible, but sometimes we need to pass busy sections in order to reach the quiet roads on the other side.

Author Stratos mountain bikes with front suspension are included in the overall price of our cycling holidays. At the time of booking we will take your height to reserve equipment.
