The Algarve, on Portugal’s southern coast, has long been seen as a premier holiday destination for guaranteed sun, fantastic beaches and fresh seafood in its charming fishing villages. In addition to these well-known perks, it is quickly becoming a global hub for cycling, with a variety of terrain that keeps Tour de France professionals and weekend warriors coming back for more year on year.
This tour takes in the full spectrum of landscapes, towns and atmospheres of the Algarve, with overnight stops in bustling seaside towns and cycling routes exploring the rugged hills that overlook the coastline.

Day 1 | Arrive at Faro.
Transfer to your hotel in Vila Real de Santo Antonio. Enjoy a stroll about town and perhaps a dip in the warm sea on the beautiful sandy beach.
Day 2 | Cycle Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Tavira | Distance 45 miles (72 km)
Your first day on the bike starts by skirting the Spanish border, towards the ancient settlement of Castro Marim. From here it is a journey through salt flats to the Beliche reservoir, before taking in the ‘lost villages’ of the Algarve, set amongst beautiful mountain scenery of the Serra da Tavira. From the mountains you pick up a river valley and follow it to the coast at Cacela Velha, before following the shoreline into Tavira itself.
Day 3 | Cycle Tavira to Faro | Distance 50 miles (80 km)
Todays route starts with a north-bound departure from Tavira, following the river into the Barrocal region, commonly known as the Algarve’s orchard. You can expect vistas of vibrant flowers and fruit trees and traditional whitewashed villages. The route continues up into the Caldeirão mountain range, where the roads twist through the lush, green peaks. A long descent back to the coast is the perfect end to the day. On it you will freewheel past the grand palace in Estoi before reaching the old town of Faro for a night at the marina.
Day 4 | Cycle Faro to Armação de Pêra | Distance 63 miles (101 km)
The start of today’s route takes you out of Faro and onto quiet, country roads in no time at all. You will pass through the market town of Loulé first, where a quick visit to the indoor market is a great way to stock up on energy-rich snacks for the riding that awaits. From Loulé, it’s a long, winding climb up to Querença, one of the most spectacular stretches of road on this tour with incredible vistas in all directions. After crossing the summit, you’ll descend back into the valleys and head towards the coast, where your hotel overlooks the beautiful beachfront.
Day 5 | Cycle Armação de Pêra (Rest Day)
Today we suggest a break from the bike and a chance to explore this part of the coastline. A short walk from the town centre you will find impressive cliffs and headlands sculpted by the waves, typical of this part of the world. The large, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters are a fantastic place to recharge the batteries too.
Day 6 | Cycle Armação de Pêra to Lagos | Distance 60 miles (97 km)
Day 6 starts by passing through the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve, Silves. The imposing castle here overlooks the town and is a quintessentially Moorish building. From here it is a steady climb up to Monchique, a spa town surrounded by pine forests and offering spectacular views of the valleys below. We encourage guests to take on the 8km climb to Foia from here, the highest peak in the Monchique range, offering views as far as the eye can see. An exhilarating descent into Lagos is an easy end of the day for legs that have done a lot of climbing today!
Day 7 | Cycle Lagos to Cabo de São Vicente | Distance 53 miles (86 km)
Yet more changes of scenery await today, as you wind up and down the west coast via the Bravura reservoir and into the Vicentina Natural Park. From the heady heights of the reservoirs you traverse westwards to the coast, before turning south and taking in the surfer’s paradise of Carrapateira. Continuing southwards, the route passes through Sagres, home to an impressive 15th century fortress and the gateway to Europe’s south-western tip, Cabo de São Vicente. We pick you up from here and transfer you to Loulé, a beautiful maze of narrow cobbled streets, lined with bars and restaurants, for your final overnight stop of the tour.
Day 8 | Departure
We say “tchau” before transferring you to Faro Airport.
