Wilderness Scotland provides some of the most awe-inspiring adventure holidays around Scotland; from the Cairngorms and the Central Highlands all the way to the Outer Hebrides and the Shetland Isles. With our sister brand company, you can spend your days soaking up the rugged landscapes and wonderful wildlife in some of the most diverse and remote locations of Scotland.
When offered a chance to try one of Wilderness’ trips, two of our ski experts, Ginny and Joel, from our other sister brand Ski Solutions, jumped at the chance to put aside their skis and try on a pair of hiking boots for a weekend of wild walking and superb sailing around Knoydart, Skye and the other small isles of Rum and Canna.
The tour our ski experts went on is a brilliant combined walking and sailing trip where you can explore the Inner Hebrides on a traditional yacht. The trip was suitable for those with no sailing experience but fit enough to endure a few long days of hiking through varied terrain as well as a 2,000ft mountain ascent. On the holiday, you will experience some of the wonderful wildlife and unspoiled locations of this rugged region.
“This trip really opened my eyes to some of the beautiful places we have in the British Isles. Waking up every morning in a stunning location, seeing the very best of some of the untouched parts of Scotland, feeling completely detached from the rest of the world” Ginny, Ski Expert
Walk along dramatic rocky ridges, up to craggy peaks with panoramic views, and venture down hidden paths to water-carved coves. Take to the sea on a beautiful, 70-year old Gaff Cutter yacht. Glide across the coastal waters, teeming with aquatic life, from one island to another; you may even be lucky enough to spot a whale or a pod of dolphins.
Eda Frandsen, the yacht, became a home for our ski experts whilst they were away. The yacht is very traditional, showing incredible workmanship to bring it back to its former beauty after having to be restored twice. After a long day hiking, you can return to the yacht and enjoy drinks and brilliant cuisine in the dining saloon or on the lovely wooden deck before retiring to your cosy bunk.
“The food was excellent, better than anything I’ve ever had on land, the cook is extremely talented and creative; one night we enjoyed a lovely curry in the inviting dining area, and on another night, we dined on fresh lobster and crab on the deck.” – Joel, Ski Expert
This trip is perfect for those looking for a ‘hands-on’ type holiday too; every passenger can take part in sailing the yacht. The experienced crew will teach you the basics of sailing Eda and, as a team, you can glide between the isles.
When you reach your destination, you will either dock in the local port or drop anchor offshore and take a small boat to reach some of the more remote locations; then, you can enjoy a day exploring the islands top to bottom on foot.
“We loved hiking to the top of Sgurr Na Stri on the Isle of Skye; from the top, you can take in one of the most incredible views of Cuillin ridge curling around Loch Coruisk. There really is an infinite amount of magnificent viewpoints here, and on the clear days, you could see for miles” – Joel
This fantastic trip lets you experience hiking in some of the most unspoiled parts of Scotland. Visit incredible castles such as Kinloch Castle, on Rum Island, and trek to the top of Cuillin Mountain on the Isle of Skye.
This holiday is perfect for those who want to see lots of Wildlife too. The area here is particularly rich in fauna and you can look forward to whale spotting from the deck of the boat, particularly around the Isle of Rum, as well as seals and a plethora of species of birds.
“I’ve never seen so much wildlife on one trip! We were treated to pods of dolphins, porpoises and even minke whales breaching. From the land, we saw lots of seals and every type of bird you can think of, especially puffins, this trip is perfect for avid bird watchers.” – Ginny, Ski Expert
Overall, our ski experts thoroughly enjoyed their time on Wilderness Scotland’s adventure-packed holiday and they are already keen to go back.
