Round Tour Piazza Armerina | Distance 22 miles (35km).
You will start the day with a transfer to Piazza Armerina famous for its Villa Romana del Casale which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. This imperial Vila with its multicoloured mosaic floors was first excavated in 1950, dates back to the 4th century AD and was probably a hunting lodge and summer residence owned by a powerful Roman family. After exploring this pretty and historic town you will cycle back to Caltagirone.
From Caltagirone to Modica | Distance 28 miles (45km).
Leaving Caltagirone, today you will cycle southwards to Comiso in the Sicilian province of Ragusa passing olive groves in the lower valleys. Modica is one of the pearls of baroque Sicily and one of the most stimulating towns in the region. Explore the bustling streets and try the local speciality spicy chilli chocolate!
From Modica to Pozzallo | Distance 22 miles (35km).
Today’s cycle descends through the low Iblei mountains past cave formations and through scenic landscape to another baroque town Scicli, which is where the well known TV series Inspector Montalbano is set. The route will then continue onto Pozzallo situated on the coast, an attractive town with blue flag beaches and perfect for a dip in the sea after a day in the saddle.
From Pozzallo to Marzamemi | Distance 34 miles (55km).
Marzamemi is today’s destination and on route you will cycle to continental Europe’s most southerly point at Portopalo di Capo Passero and the island of Correnti where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Ionian sea. Marzamemi is a pretty fishing town with lots of charming restaurants ideal for enjoying the local tuna.
From Marzamemi to Noto | Distance 16 miles (25km).
The route now heads North along the Ionian coast through the Vendicari Nature Reserve to the UNESCO listed town of Noto. Vendicari is an extraordinary expanse of wild flower fields, lagoons and marshlands protected for migratory species and has some beautiful beaches perfect for a refreshing dip during your cycle ride. Your destination is considered the finest Baroque town in Sicily and a relatively unknown gem. The centre is one of the most stunning in Italy and one of it’s highlights is Corso Vittorio Emanuele the main walkway along which you will find impressive piazzas, churches and golden stone buildings.
From Noto to Syracuse | Distance 22 miles (35km).
