Sicilian Volcanoes | Guided Group

Day 1

Arrival in Milazzo.

You will begin your journey at the hotel in Milazzo, in the North of Sicily’s mainland. We strongly recommend joining the group transfer at Catania airport and travelling to the start point with the group, as public transport connections from Catania to Milazzo are limited.

Day 2

From Milazzo to Lipari | Distance 4 miles (8km) | Elevation +390m / -390m.

On your first walking day, you will start by getting on a boat across to one of the seven Aeolian Islands, Vulcano. The island is famous for its long stretches of black beaches and bubbling thermal springs. You will begin the walk and make your way uphill to the top of the crater where you will see the streaming 'Fumaroles' (vents of volcanic gas). In the afternoon there will be some free time for bathing in Vulcano's hot springs and mud baths, before heading back to Milazzo.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 3

Round Tour Lipari | Distance 7 miles (12km) | Elevation +360m / -500m.

The day will start with a bus ride to the village of Quattropani where you will start your walk along the picturesque trail along Lipari's western and wildest coast. You will then reach the beautiful town of Lipari after having passed the old roman spa of San Calogero. After lunch, you will be free to explore this town, including the castle and the archaeological museum. The day will end with a traditional wine and food tasting.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch

Day 4

From Lipari to Stromboli | Distance 5 miles (9km) | Elevation +400m / -400m.

You will leave the town of Lipari behind as you hop on a boat to Stromboli. This island is home to one of only four active volcanoes in Italy. When you get there, you will have time to relax on the island's famous black sandy beaches. For sunset, we walk to the western side of Stromboli to reach the spectacular 'Sciara del Fuoco', a fiery channel where the lava outflows can sometimes plunge directly into the sea.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 5

Free Day Stromboli | Distance 7 miles (12km) | Elevation +924m / -924m.

Before lunch you will be free to relax on the beach or have a stroll through Stromboli town or enjoy a boat trip around the island. In the afternoon you will take a guided excursion to the summit area of Stromboli at 942m accompanied by a certified volcano guide. As night falls, you will have the chance to better see the activity of the volcano. Please note: the excursion is weather and volcanic conditions dependent; the descent is very dusty, so it may not be suitable for asthma sufferers. You will need a head-torch as you descend after nightfall.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 6

From Stromboli to Etna.

After breakfast, we will leave for Milazzo by boat and then transfer to the beautiful town of Taormina by private minibus. If time allows, you will have the opportunity to visit the town’s Greek Theatre – originally built during the 3rd century BC and still used for performances during Taormina's annual summer arts festival. You may also have time to take an optional short walk which starts from the pretty mediaeval town of Castelmola (2 miles / 3 km). You will then head to your accommodation for the night, a mountain lodge at 1900m above sea level, from where you can enjoy great views over the sea and the east coast of Sicily.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 7

From Etna to Catania | Distance 5 miles (9km).

Today, you can decide between two walks: a hike in the southern area of the Mount Etna volcano (scheduled in the programme and accompanied by your tour leader) or an optional summit trek accompanied by a volcanologist to the top craters of Mt Etna (payable locally and volcanic conditions dependent). If you choose the first walk you will hike up past several lava flows to be rewarded with a dramatic panoramic view of the four craters that make up the top of this famous volcano, plus extensive views of the entire coast of Sicily (6 miles / 9km). Alternatively, if you opt for the summit trek, you will start with a ride by cable car and sometimes 4x4 jeeps up until 2900m and then further on foot to 3350m to walk along the rim of the Bove valley, an extensive depression that opened up thousands of years ago as a result of a massive landslide (6 miles / 9km). In the afternoon we will be transferred to Catania by a private minibus, where you will stay for the night.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 8

End in Catania.

We say “arrivederci” and “a presto”!

Suitability

The walks on this trip are graded moderate. Although some walks will get your pulse racing we will also have plenty of time to rest, admire the views and on many days we can also enjoy swim breaks! Over the course of the week, the terrain and type of path will vary from manmade paved tracks and tarmac to forest trails. Some areas may be rocky underfoot with narrow, overgrown or exposed paths. Although the walks are not technically challenging, you do need to be steady on your feet. All walks take between 4 and 6 hours including lunch stops and require a moderate level of fitness. On a couple of days, there are sections with a considerable number of steps (more than 500), which make the walks unsuitable for those with knees problems.
