Südtirol – Valleys, Vines and Vistas | Self Guided

7 Night Tour

Day 1

Arrive at Verona or Innsbruck.

Transfer by train (included) or taxi (priced on request) to your first hotel in the historical town of Brixen (Bressanone), set in the heart of the dolomites beneath the Plose mountains rocky spine. The evening is yours to take in the views, absorb the towns buzz and see some sights. As the oldest town in the Südtirol, there is no shortage of historical attractions, with the grand cathedral being our favourite spot.

Day 2

From Hochpustertal to Brixen | Distance 40 miles (65 km).

This morning you will be transferred from your hotel to Hochpustertal (Dobbiaco), where your ride will begin after a welcome meeting with your local representative and you will be set up with your bikes. Today’s cycle route takes you along a cycle path, following the river Rienz to the west with stunning mountain vistas all around you. You will pass through Bruneck (Brunico), a vibrant town and the perfect place to stop for lunch. Onwards from here, you continue along the river, passing the Neustift Abbey before arriving back in Brixen (Bressanone) for the night.

Day 3

From Brixen to Bozen | Distance 25 miles (40 km).

Starting from your hotel today, you will leave Brixen (Bressanone) by bike and follow the Eisack valley bike path, along the riverside and into the vineyards, to the regional capital, Bolzano. On the way you will pass through the picturesque town of Klausen where you can stroll through its medieval streets and take in the fabulous views of its hillside vineyards. From here you continue along the Eisack river to Bozen (Bolzano). We suggest aiming to arrive early here so that you have the time to explore its arcades and lawns, as well as to pay a visit to Ötzi the Iceman in the archaeological museum.

Day 4

Optional Round Trip to Kalterer See | Distance 34 miles (55 km).

Today’s optional cycle route takes you on a tour of the region’s famous wine producing area around the crystal blue waters of the Kalterer See. Heading south from Bozen (Bolzano), you will make your way to the town of Eppan (Appiano). This town is the largest wine producer in the Südtirol and is home to a number of castles and churches which make for some great holiday photos. You will then continue to the town of Kaltern (Caldaro), home to an interesting museum on the local wines, and it’s famous bathing lake, the Kalterer See. After a quick dip in the lake, it’s back to Bozen (Bolzano) via the Etsch cycle path.

Day 5

From Bozen to Meran | Distance 28 miles (45km).

Day 5 takes you to the spa town of Meran (Merano), a tranquil town nestles between high mountains on the Adige river. You will head west out of Bozen (Bolzano), past the Sigmundksron castle, and onto the wine road, passing through seemingly infinite apple orchards. On route you will pass the oldest winery in the Südtirol at Andriano, before passing through the small towns of Terlano, Nalles and then Lana before arriving in Meran (Merano). The Mediterranean climate here is often a pleasant surprise and the colourful plant life in the botanical gardens makes the most of the warmth and sunlight. The town is home to a number of blossoming park areas and a host of art nouveau architecture, making it another great spot for budding photographers.

Day 6

Optional Trip Mals to Meran | Distance 38 miles (60km).

If the spa town of Meran hasn’t tempted you into a day of rest, a train ride to Mals will allow you to cruise back down the Vinschgau valley at your leisure. This route passes the bottom of the famous Stelvio pass and the towns of Glorenza, Silandro and Naturno on its way back to Meran (Merano).

Day 7

Form Meran to Brixen | Distance 25 miles (40 km).

Today starts with a transfer to the top of the Jaufenpass, at a mighty 2,092m of altitude. From here you can enjoy a long, winding descent toward the town of Sterzing (Vipiteno). From here, you cycle southwards along the cycle paths of the Eisack valley to the former checkpoint town of Franzensfeste (Fortezza) before continuing to Brixen (Bressanone), with enough time for a refreshing swim in the Vahrner See if you are so inclined.

Day 8

We say “auf weidersehn” and “arrivederci” before transferring you to Verona or Innsbruck.
