This stunning tour follows the “Via Rhona”, a cycle path that connects Lake Geneva with France’s Mediterranean beaches. The route includes two of Europe’s most interesting cities, Geneva and Lyon and winds its way along the River Rhone through some of France’s most beautiful villages, past Roman ruins, shimmering lakes and panoramic mountain scenery. There’s plenty of opportunity to taste the regions gastronomic delights and sample the local wines too.
Day 1 | Arrive at Geneva
Check into your hotel in the heart of the city. Enjoy a stroll around this cosmopolitan city and discover its old town, botanical gardens or shop for its famous watches and swiss chocolate. If time permits admire the ‘Jet d’Eau’ from the banks of Europe’s largest lake.
Day 2 | Cycle Geneva to Seyssel | Distance 38 miles (62km).
After breakfast, you will be equipped with your bike and taken through your welcome briefing and itinerary. Then its on your bike as you head south west across the Swiss border at Chancy into the beautiful wine region of the Rhone-Alpes in France, through rolling hills and past stunning rock formations and ancient ruins. On route, you’ll cycle to the highest point of the tour offering stunning panoramic views before enjoying the downhill ride to the town of Seyssel on the River Rhone. The medieval town is known for its excellent food and wine, as well as its mountain scenery.
Day 3 | Cycle Seyssel to Champagneux | Distance 35 miles (56km).
Today, the fairly level route takes you to Champagneux with highly recommended stops at Chanaz, known as the little Venice of Savoie and the town of Belley where you can taste exquisite local cheeses and explore its 15th Century historic buildings. A slightly longer route will allow you to stop for lunch in one of the ancient wineries on the sublime Lac de Bourget (+12 miles/20km) and perhaps even a refreshing swim before continuing on with a short ascent to Champagneux where you can admire the incredible valley views.
Day 4 | Cycle Champagneux to Perouges | Distance 42 miles (68km).
Following the Rhone River to Perouges, the route passes through small peaceful villages and lovely countryside in the ‘Bugey’ region, one of the best kept secrets in the wine world. Your destination for the evening is the walled medieval hilltop village of Perouges with its fairytale alpine backdrop and well preserved buildings – no wonder its officially one of the ‘most beautiful villages in France.’
Day 5 | Cycle Perouges to Lyon | Distance 26 miles (42km).
You can either choose a longer route to Lyon today which continues along the Rhone River through several more of France’s prettiest villages and marvellous landscapes (+11miles/17km) or you can take the more direct route along the Via Rhona to the dynamic city. You may need to book an extra night in Lyon to discover its riches including the food stalls at Les Halles, excellent museums, shops and gastronomic delights in a typical Lyonnais ‘bouchon.’ Your final stop is your hotel in the neighbourhood of la Croix Rousse.
